JOYFUL
RESISTANCE began as a call to weave
music and message together. We wanted to have a voice for our activism
that although is often about struggle, is also about joy, about
celebrating our victories, and our lives as women, and citizens,
as feminists, as grandmothers, mothers, and daughters.
What
began as an outlet for our music, our rhythm, our dance, is fast
becoming a forum for all women who wish to be empowered by the strength
of many, of our shared stories and our varied lives.
We
wanted to build community, to share what we have and what we know
and learn what we don't. We wanted to be exposed to ideas that were
knew to us and to encourage other women to step up in their rightful
place and be as BIG as you want.
In
our world, where women are still sometimes taught to be NICE, be
gentle, be patient, be courteous, and all the words of oppression
that we have all heard, JOYFUL RESISTANCE is about
standing up and singing out, ... That's ENOUGH of That!
Our
hope is to join women in song and rhythm, bringing our drumming
and our music to you, via concerts, fundraisers, workshops, &
more. Music is a right, and we are all born with rhythm around us
- and in us. JOYFUL RESISTANCE will remind us all
of that part of us which has been quieted by patriarchy, by this
too fast paced world we live in, and sometimes, even by our foremothers.
We
bring a spirit to our playing. Each time we pack up from a performance,
inevitably a woman will come up to us, and say, Thank you SO MUCH
- for saying what is in my heart. For speaking to my soul, and for
taking me with you on this journey. You made me dance, and you made
my cry and I need more JOYFUL RESISTANCE in my
life!
We
are evolving, daily, as is JOYFUL RESISTANCE. What
it is today, is hopeful, ... What it will be tomorrow, is unknown.

JOYFUL
RESISTANCE is a collective
of musicians with a joyous, activist's voice.
They bring awareness and ... JOYFUL RESISTANCE to their audiences,
whether in concerts such as tonight, or at conferences for organizations,
rally's for causes worth rallying for, … events where the
human spirit is championed!
Joyful Resistance's
music is moving, haunting, and full of vim and vigor. There is such
a deep moving in the belly, when they play. Women dance, as old
ancient places are tapped into, and are given new birth. They love
doing what we do! And their enthusiasm is contagious.
They are Cori
Sandler, Deb Parent & Jessie Steinberg. Their message
is empowerment. Living Life Large. And being heard - whether in
"a quiet meditative vocal trance with a Tibetan healing bowl,
or a "fill the room with those drums" kind of song!
They are not afraid to speak to the difficult issues we face daily;
Abuse, Discrimination, Classism, Racism, Homophobia, Gender inequality,
Anti - war, Human Rights, our Environment, and more.
Cori
Sandler is a singer/songwriter/drummer/instrumentalist.
Her interpretation of the unguarded ballad, her liquid, somewhere
between gut wrenching blues and soaring tantaric vocalizing leave
you on the edge of your seat wanting more. It's all about the movement;
the movement of voice, of body and of energy. Collective music,
bringing her audiences in to join in song is at the heart ... of
her heart. She recently was commissioned to write an accapella score
for the 1st ever National Post's Online Women's Issue.
Jessie
Steinberg is a drummer/didgeridoo-ists/educator/volunteer
firefighter. She breaths life into her didgeridoo, taking audiences
on a walk about to some mystical rhythmical land and this journey
is grounded by the steady, body rocking, imaginative, tight as all
... beat of the drum. She is the little child all grown up, saying
... come’ on and play with me.
Deb
Parent is drummer/activist/educator. Having worked for
over 25 years in rape crisis centers, she brings a clear feminist
voice to her surroundings. She has beat on that DRUM since she was
a 12-year-old kid living in Ottawa, and continues to beat to various
drums making us all turn around and listen to her song! Deb recently
is the 2007 recipient of the Pride Award as part of the Access,
Equity and Human rights Awards 2007, issued by Mayor David Miller
or Toronto.
Ellie
Avishai is a singer songwriter with her own CD released
in 2008. She brings to JR a glorious voice and stunning songwriting
abilities. Her voice is rich in texture and tone. The harmonies
and interplay that occur between Cori and Ellie is quite stunning
- Just You Wait, when you hear it, you'll know what we mean.
Deb, Cori, Jessie and Ellie weave jembe's and djun djun's, vocals,
didgeridoo and guitar throughout the performance, honoring those
women that have come before.
These women
take you on a journey that is so sweet. The kind of journey that
makes you hear the wind through the trees, the kind of journey that
makes you know you are part of a village who takes care of each
other, who holds each other and who through music, laughs and cries
together. Joyful Resistance is both hip swaying, arm raising, west
African drumming and soulful, heart wrenching, torch singing ballads.
Cori writes haunting melodies such as found in "We Are Looking
For The Women" - a song about violence against women and children.
Rhythm is what we all know. We walk in rhythm, we breathe in rhythm,
we chew in rhythm, and we make love in rhythm... Drumming is primal,
it is a mother's heartbeat, it is a protesters marching, and it
is what we all know. Jessie's didgeridoo will make you close your
eyes and recall the primal sounds of warrior women…Joyful
Resistance travels on a blanket of intercultural sound weavings,
blending improvised melodic vocals, and spirit moving rhythm with
the trans like sounds of the didgeridoo. They take you on a silky,
organic, intoxicating journey of sensual and tender melodies woven
through a rhythmic palette. Joyful Resistance is truly a mix for
the spirit. Not just one kind of music, not just one kind of listening,
but a holistic journey into sound!
They
say: "We are women - Our Drum, Our Voice, Our Heartbeat!
& This ain't background music! We erupt.
The floor starts to shake. You can't sit still any longer.
The spirit dances & she takes your body & leads you to the
floor.
Her arms enfold you & she moves you to the dance.
She is the drum...She is home... for every human"
If you want
them to come to your area, call your local clubs, email them, and
tell your local music venue that you want to see JOYFUL RESISTANCE
perform. Call them in to action at your next rally or event or conference
or gathering - They will perform in concert or provide workshops
(incorporating mindfulness drumming, voice, wendo – a Women's
self defense course) & didgeridoo.
They were founding
members of the women's drumming ensemble WombBOOM with whom they've
released 2 cds: Walk Me to the Edge, and If I Told You.
Both are available
here today.
