Come see 3 members from"WombBOOM" now forming Joyful Resistance at Oxfam's General Assembly May 11, 07 in Ottawa at the National Gallery.

This is a collective of musicians with a political voice - An activist's voice
bringing to your organization, your rally, your fundraiser, your community, your school, your party,... awareness and ... JOYFUL RESISTANCE! We are Cori Sandler, Deb Parent & Jessie Steinberg. The message is empowerment. Living Life Large
We are not afraid to speak to the difficult issues we as women face daily;
Abuse, Discrimination, Classism, Racism, Homophobia, Gender inequality, Anti - war, human rights, our environment, and more.
Joyful Resistance's music is moving, haunting, and full of vim and vigour
. There is such a deep moving in the belly, when we play. Women dance, as old ancient places are tapped into and are given new birth. We love doing what we do! Cori Sandler's interpretation of the unguarded ballad, her liquid, somewhere between gut wrenching blues and soaring tantaric vocalizing leave you on the edge of your seat. Jessie Steinberg breaths life into her didgeridoo, taking audiences on a walk about to some mystical rhythmical land and this journey is grounded by the steady, body rocking, imaginative, tight as all ... beat of the drum - Deb Parent, Cori Sandler and Jessie Steinberg weave jembe's and djun djun's, vocals & didgeridoo, throughout the performance, holding it all together, honoring those women that have come before."We are women - Our Drum, Our Voice, Our Heartbeat!
& this ain't background music! We erupt.
The floor starts to shake. You can't sit still any longer.
The spirit dances & she takes your body & leads you to the floor.
Her arms enfold you & she moves you to the dance.
She is the drum...She is home... for every human"
These women take you on a journey that is so sweet. The kind of journey that makes you hear the wind through the trees, the kind of journey that makes you know you are part of a village who takes care of each other, who holds each other and who through music, laughs and cries together.Joyful Resistance is both hip swaying, arm raising, west African drumming and soulful, heart wrenching, torch singing ballads. Cori writes haunting melodies such as found in "We Are Looking For The Women" - a song about violence against women and children. Rhythm is what we all know. We walk in rhythm, we breathe in rhythm, we chew in rhythm, we make love in rhythm... Drumming is primal, it is a mother's heartbeat, it is a protesters marching, it is known. Jessie's didgeridoo will make you close your eyes and recal the primal sounds of warrior women…Joyful Resistance travels on a blanket of intercultural sound weavings, blending improvised melodic vocals, and spirit moving rhythm with the trans like sounds of the didgeridoo. They take you on a silky, organic, intoxicating journey of sensual and tender melodies woven through a rhythmic palette.Joyful Resistance is truly a mix for the spirit. Not just one kind of music, Not just one kind of listening, but a holistic journey into sound!

If you want us to come to your area, call your local clubs, email us, tell your local music venue that you want to see JOYFUL RESISTANCE perform. Call us in to action at your next rally or event or gathering - We can provide workshops (incorporating mindfulness drumming, voice, wendo) and or performance, depending on your needs.

What People Are Saying:

Totally awesome. Sure wish you could come to Sacramento. Close to Napa, you know...
I was very touch by your music and it's purpose.
The best part of the night for me was your drumming performance. “Now I Feel empowered”.
•‘I am from Africa, and I play the drum, and YOU!!!, YOU can play that drum, You can sure play that drum!
I had a really rough week, and you gave me that shot of feminism that I really needed.
Music moves me on a soul level, … That is what speaks to me, I just moved into xxxx (the women's shelter for abused women) and I don’t really have any friends yet, I haven’t made any contacts yet, It’s been rough, but I am here and I am still alive. When you started to sing, I knew you were singing for me. (This women asked if we sell our CD’s locally, I told her about our wombboom website. I asked for her email if she had one and she said her server is often down. When I saw that she had a hotmail account, I realized that it wasn’t a server problem she was referring to , but an access issue or a transition issue – It was after we spoke about how to purchase a CD outside of the event last night that she (gently) began to share her circumstances with me, letting me know that I can reach her at xxxx, the women’s shelter…., I then handed her a CD and said, “How about I get in touch with you” – A big hug, and a gift shared both ways between women.
I couldn’t dance to the piece you sang about the river and the forest… It reminded me of a beautiful song in Spanish about the women in Nicaragua where I am from, who go to work in the mountains, and are raped repeatedly, often while pregnant. They women are often left for dead, or killed and discarded. The foetus are aborted while in the mountains, and are dumped in the river. The townspeople below find them in the water, and the water is red from blood. Many of these women are never found, and because they are poor, women, their cause is not taken up and no one is held accountable or sought out for punishment. Even if you would not understand the language, you would get the intention of the song. Just like you in your song about looking for the women… If I would not have understood the language, I would have still understood the song. Thank you for speaking to that.
We can’t imagine one of these without you!
You are my favourite part of these event. I am so happy you were here again.
I have created an outreach program at a college, and I would love to bring you to the women.
Totally awesome. Sure wish you could come to Sacramento. Close to Napa, you know....
With love,
I was very touch by your music and it's purpose.
"I have never seen the likes of you. Women who groove, who make me move, who soar, who tempt, who remind me that I am older than my years and have heard these rhythms many times in many lives. Thanks beyond words. ...
